Scholarships and Financial Aid for International Students

At the University of Oregon, you’ll find several sources of financial aid for international students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Below is a resource of financial aid and scholarship opportunities within specific UO offices. You can also access the UO Scholarship Search database.

International Affairs

International Affairs administers a variety of loans, scholarships, grants and work/study awards specifically for international undergraduate, graduate, and continuing students:

International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) Tuition Scholarships

International Affairs grants 30-40 scholarships to international students each year. Awards apply to tuition only and range from $9,000–$12,000 per year.

ICSP Nascence Scholarship
This supplemental scholarship is awarded to a student from China or Hong Kong who is also a recipient of the International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) scholarship.

International Dean’s Excellence Award (IDEA) for New International Students
This is a merit-based, partial-tuition scholarship awarded to new international undergraduate applicants. All international students who apply for admission by the priority deadline of March 15 are considered for this award. A separate application is not required. The scholarship is valued at $4,000–$8,000 each and is renewable based on academic performance.

International Student Work-Study Program
International Affairs grants more than 50 work-study awards, ranging from $500–$3,00 each year, to eligible international students with financial need. Students who receive these awards can compete for on-campus work-study jobs during the academic year. Students are not guaranteed on-campus jobs, but opportunities for on-campus employment will increase.

Other Scholarships for International Students

International Affairs grants 15-20 scholarships per year to students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit. Click here to apply for one or more of the scholarships below.

  • Kenneth S. Ghent Scholarship: Honoring Dr. Kenneth S. Ghent, former director of International Affairs, several scholarships of approximately $3,500 each may be awarded for the 2008–09 academic year. Awards are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be in the last year of their degree programs in 2008–09 to be eligible. Not available to prospective students.
  • Pressman Family Scholarship: Honoring the Pressman family, one scholarship of approximately $750 may be awarded for the 2008–09 academic year. Continuing and prospective UO international students may apply.
  • Pin Julaphongs Thai Student Scholarship: In memory of former UO student Pin Julaphong, one scholarship of approximately $1,000 may be awarded to a Thai student for the 2008–09 academic year. Continuing and prospective UO Thai students may apply. 
  • Sushil Jajodia Indian Student Scholarship: Established by UO alumnus Sushil Jajodia, '77, scholarship awards of approximately $2,000 each may be awarded to Indian students for the 2008–09 academic year. Continuing and prospective Indian students may apply.
  • John Haines African Student Scholarship: Established by Dr. John Haines, a Eugene ophthalmologist with a keen interest in international students, two scholarships of approximately $2,000 each may be awarded for the 2008–09 academic year. Continuing and prospective UO African students may apply.
  • Helen and Barney Wood Nepalese Student Scholarship: Established by Dr. Wood, a former UO professor of education, one scholarship of approximately $2,000 may be awarded for the 2008–09 academic year to a student from Nepal. This is a supplemental award for a student who receives a tuition scholarship from another source.
  • Jim and Jean Tattersall International Student Scholarship: Honoring Jim and Jean Tattersall, one scholarship of approximately $1,500 may be awarded for the 2008–09 academic year. Continuing and prospective UO international students may apply.
  • Alumni Association (UOAA) Japan Chapter Scholarship: Each year, University of Oregon alumni chapters award scholarships to UO students from their local areas. Awards are based on extra curricular activities, academic merit, and the applicant’s essay. The UOAA Japan Chapter is offering a scholarship of approximately $1000 to a current UO Japanese student. Applicants must have junior or senior standing in their degree programs by September 2008 to be eligible. Not available to prospective students.
  • Johan & Emel Mehlum Family Scholarship: Established by Johan and Emel Mehlum, one scholarship of approximately $6,000 may be awarded for the 2008–09 academic year. This scholarship is only available for an entering freshman from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • John Taylor More Scholarship: Established in honor of John Taylor More, parent of UO alumnus Iain More ‘67, who came to Oregon as an international student from Scotland. At least one scholarship of up to $20,000 will be awarded to assist a student(s) from Scotland to study at the University of Oregon for the 2008–2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective Scottish students may apply.

Other Sources of Financial Aid

The Pan American Fellowship Fund was established by the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs (OFWC) in 1946 to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Latin America pursue graduate work at an Oregon college or university, and to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Oregon pursue graduate work in Latin America. The fellowship award pays the recipient $325 per month for ten months (September through June.)

The Rowe Fund is an Educational Loan Program of the Organization of the American States. It grants interest-free loans to people from Latin American and Caribbean countries to help them finance their higher education at accredited universities in the U.S. There is a maximum of $7,500 per academic period.

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund is an outreach program of the World Bank Family Network. The fund provides financial assistance to women from developing countries during their studies in the U.S. or Canada. The MMMF annually awards six to ten grants of approximately $11,000 each. The application must be completed online at wbfn.org (click on Outreach.)
